"A Conversation With Randy"
Meet Randy
Randy Frame: Owner
Randy is a 14 year veteran of the entertainment industry performing both as
musician and actor. In addition to Frame Sound Productions He also works as a
Luthier repairing guitars and building a limited number of custom instuments.
Randy Frame has over 14 years experience in the entertainment industry as well
as being a maker of custom electric guitars. Some years ago the idea to make a
recording studio that offered services anyone could afford was spawned during a
conversation with other fellow musicians remembering how hard it was to get an
album done in the early days of their careers.
“I remember when we dreamed of making an album but we didn’t have the
money… if my memory is correct it was going to take something like $6000. And
that was only with 300 copies of the album, that was like 1989 or 90 and that was
cassette in those days (chuckle). We would have had to make 20 bucks on each
tape just to break even and really, who was gonna pay that kind of money for a
tape of some amateur band right out of high school?”
After that conversation Randy thought why not make a studio that is actually
affordable to people who want to make a project and still be able to pay the bills.
Randy decided to put his experience behind the console. He created Frame Sound
Productions and has been working toward the goal of making other peoples
dreams a reality ever since.
“ It’s incredible! There are a lot of really good musicians and nobody knows
they're out there. I hope we can help them to get heard and build up a fan base...”
“ If bands can make albums they can not only afford but also make some money
on, it helps keep the band going and increases the odds of making a career with
their music. If I can help them be successful I want to, it’s that simple.”
Randy’s experience helped give him a unique perspective into the highly
competitive field of music and recording in general. He realized that it wasn’t
enough to sound good you have to sound great!
“ With computer based digital recording becoming more and more popular,
smaller more affordable home-grown studios were popping up all over. The
biggest problem I found was that most of them were put together by people who
had very little or no actual experience in the industry and the recordings were not
as polished as they could have been. I’m not saying they weren’t good they just
weren’t great. When you consider the fact that there are not only thousands of
musicians out there but hundreds of thousands, the importance of sounding not
just good but great becomes pretty clear. It’s a competitive field and in order to
compete you have to always sound the best that you can…” “…ultimately the
better sounding band gets the gig and the better sounding demo gets the record
deal”
After forming Frame Sound Productions, Randy decided to put the studio in the
small town of Shelbyville, TN.
“It’s an ideal location really, we’re about an hour outside of the Nashville area
(which has more studios than you can count) so we don’t have issues of people
having difficulty finding us in a large city. It also has an added benefit in that all of
our clients can record their projects with as little distraction and interruptions as
possible. If the artist already has a following of fans they can come here discreetly
and record without having to dodge a crowd of autograph hounds (chuckle).
Thirdly, it makes us more accessible to smaller more local bands too. We get the
opportunity to work with all people this way, not to mention we have lower
operating costs (i.e. rent, utilities, etc) and that translates into savings for our
clients as well. It’s a win – win situation.”
Still, Shelbyville seems like an odd choice. Do you see yourself maybe one day
moving to a larger city?
“I may open other studios in other areas to make Frame Sound Productions more
accessible but I’m not looking to move. I came from Shelbyville myself and it’s my
home. Besides, there is a lot of great talent here and as long as there are
musicians here who want to sound great I’ll be here to try to make their dreams
come true, just being able to do that means my dreams already have.”
